CARRIER OILS:

These are foundations of any massage blend, which carriers the essential oil through the skin into the bloodstream.  A plant carrier oil has small molecules, and transports the essential oils through the bloodstream.  Essential oils intended for aromatherapy massage need to be diluted in a natural base oil such as olive, almond or sunflower seed etc., preferably labeled "unrefined" or "cold pressed".  Cold pressed are pressed by (mechanical extraction).  If a vegetable oil is not labeled as such, it is certain to be a highly refined product extracted by high pressure, intense heat, and possibly petroleum derived solvents.  Vegetable oils consist of essential fatty acids and contain the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E.  Some vegetable oils also contain large amounts of gamma linoleic acid   (GLA), useful for the treatment of P.M.S.  For many years aromatherapists have promoted refined oils such as grapeseed (unavailable in an unrefined state) on the grounds that have almost no odor of their own and therefore do not interfere with the aroma of essential oils.  Heat-treated oils lose some of their nutritional value, so always use a cold pressed, unrefined vegetable oil as a base oil for the dilution of essential oils.  Use a certified organic vegetable oil as this guarantees that no chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or fungicides have been used in production.  The darker the colour the less refined the oil, so it will be richer in health-giving properties.  It is important to remember that once unrefined oil has oxidized, it will have a detrimental effect on the skin.  If kept in the fridge most cold-pressed oils will keep up to nine months (check the best before date).   Carrier oils for Aromatherapy should be cold pressed, but a problem with cold pressing is that internal heat is created by the process.  This involves placing the seeds or nuts on a press, a large screw is turned causing the pressure to build up on the seeds or nuts, thus releasing the oils.  Heat is naturally produced using this technique, and a careful watch must be kept to be sure that the temperature doesn't exceed 60 degrees Celsius.  (It appears that at present only France limits the process and maintains this temperature.  After pressing, the oil is then filtered.  Many companies sell under the heading "pure" cold pressed carrier oils.  In fact you can even purchase these oils in your local supermarket.  Supermarket oils can in many cases, be over-refined.  Be warned, only the best and most reliable oils should be used by professionals and these are normally only available to Aromatherapists and other professionals.
